By studying an Old Text such as Beowulf, it helps us to learn and interpret the true meaning behing the theme of Good vs. Evil. The text includes a quest filled wih villians and the Epic Hero. These things were first used to help people relate to a greater good such as a superhuman who overcomes villains who represent evil. This helped the people of that time relae and be entertained by the story. This also allows us to see how the theme of good vs evil originated and that the writing of that time can still entertain the audiences of this generation.

We always hear in our history classes that we learn from our mistakes and that history repeats itself, well the same thing applies in literature. There is always a good and an evil in any timeline, but the only way we can improve is if we know what to improve on. Does that make sense?

  15. Max Gruttadauria says:

Although we do not know exactly how old Beowulf is, it still shows one of the greatest examples of good versus evil, if not one of the first. Because good versus evil has dated back to before anybody can remember, it must be remembered and discussed as one of the first conflicts to ever strike the world. In the earlier ages, when the people believed in such superior supernatural figures such as demons and gods that could smite you at their will. These figures caused ruckus in the world causing the everlasting theme of good versus evil. Whether you blame Pandora for letting the evils in the world out of her Zeus given box or you believe in the Devil in Hell that conflict between evil is still there. The fight between good and evil continues even today as you witness all of the terrorism and hate in society. Relating such an old theme in the writing of Beowulf you can relate it to todays society, making it appeasing to the young audience in high school today.

  16. Ahlora says:

Good vs. Evil is the driving force in almost any story. It may not always be as black and white as something like Harry Potter vs. Lord Voldemort. Now a days evil is shown in many ways such as illnesses like cancer and the good force in the story is the doctor or person trying to cure it. They may not come with flashing swords and rough battle cries but it’s still the basic fact that good is trying to triumph evil. The main reason we study it is to appreciate it properly. When we say good vs. evil most of the people I know think of a gloom and doom villan and a bright all american hero. I see good and evil right now I see my 18 month old husky puppy lying on the floor with a broken leg because the evil in my situation is a person who hit my dog and drove away. Right now I see good as the vet helping him, my parents helping him, and the wonderful people who helped get him to the hospital and also want to find the person that hit him. So good and evil is important to study in an old text like Beowulf because sometimes we lose what good and evil really is, but it’s true meaning hasn’t changed in time even if we lost it.

From old text such as Beowulf to recent literature, the theme of good vs. evil has been used almost all the time. By studying the theme from older text, it shows us how long we have been using it. If we continue to use it today, does it not mean it still holds some kind of importance or reason to why we study it? In the past, what was good and what was evil was defined by a clear line. Recently,it has gotten harder to tell the difference. Grendal killed the warriors so he is considered evil and Beo stood up to Grendal which makes him the epic hero. Then all the “what if”s” come up. Such as what if Grendal was sent by someone else without a choice, or what if he was only seeking revenge from something horrible the warriors have done? Does that still make him the evil one? The world is constantly changing and literature is evolving. The theme of good vs. evil should be studied because it comes up everywhere from however long ago. Also by studying it from older text, it shows how much literature has changed from then and now.

Perhaps we should not look at it as “Good vs Evil”, but different motives and desires? Grendel and his mother had an appetite for bloodshed, but does that mean they are “Evil”? Is a dragon defending its treasure from little humans different from an ant stealing your food that you took great care to cook? When Moses killed an entire population for the greater good was that really a good thing to do? When a mother bear kills a family camping in the woods because they trespass on her territory and her cub is in danger, does that make her evil? learn to read past good and evil and think of why things happen instead of its “Good” or “Bad” Just my 2 cents

    • Mr. S says:

Miranda- interesting though process. What do you think was the causes of their behavior? You are taking an interesting approach to this idea, dig a bit more.

      • Miranda says:

Well, their loved ones were threatened and thats reason enough for any type of conflict. I just think that good vs evil might be too easy for our reading level right now
